Both of Johnson's professional fights have been at the Braehead arena |
Benington boxer Callum Johnson kept his unbeaten professional record after beating Scunthorpe's Jody Meikle on points at Glasgow's Braehead arena. Fighting on the undercard to Ricky Burns' world title fight, judges scored the fight 40-35 in Johnson's favour. He told BBC Lincolnshire: "That's two fights and two wins so I'm very happy. "I was pleased with the way I adapted in the final round and started using my jab. There's a few things I need to improve on but I'm pleased overall." The 25-year-old, who was a gold medallist for Scotland as an amateur at the Commonwealth games in Delhi, was fighting at the same venue where he won on his professional debut against Philip Townley. He won all four rounds and his victory was made more comfortable when Meikle was docked a point in the third round for holding. | I'm pleased it's gone the distance and I had to deal with that sort of opponent |
Johnson said: "He came to survive and he was a spoiler but I take my hat off to him, he survived the four rounds and I did dish out some punishment. "It's the first time in my life I've fought four rounds of three minutes. As an amateur it's only three rounds but I had a good pace, I had plenty of energy and I felt I could have gone another four rounds. "I'm pleased it's gone the distance and I had to deal with that sort of opponent, if it happens again I'll know what to do and it's all part of the learning curve."
