Veteran Jamaican Glen Johnson knocked out Allan Green in the eighth round on Saturday to advance through to the Super Six tournament semi-finals.

Johnson, a former world light-heavyweight champion, dropped down to super-middleweight to take on his American opponent on Saturday in Vegas.

Both fighters are injury replacements in the six-man event.

Johnson, 41, used a devastating right-left combination to floor Green only 36 seconds into the eighth round.

The group stages conclude this month, with semi-final and title bouts scheduled for 2011.

Johnson was replacing Denmark's former WBC champion Mikkel Kessler who dropped out with an eye injury while Green came in for injured countryman Jermain Taylor.

The Jamaican joins WBA champion Andre Ward, Germany's Arthur Abraham and England's Carl Froch in the semis.

Abraham and Froch meet later in November in Finland where they will contest the vacant WBC world title.

Both Abraham and Froch will advance to the semis no matter what the result of their fight on 27 November.

Also on Saturday, unbeaten Puerto Rican Juan Manuel Lopez retained his WBO featherweight title when challenger Rafael Marquez retired with a shoulder injury at the end of the eighth round

Lopez, 30-0 (27 KOs) dominated much of the bout against Mexico's Marquez (39-6, 35 KOs), a former bantamweight and super-bantamweight champion bidding to win a title in his third weight class.
