Brook is unbeaten in 21 professional fights |
Kell Brook has dismissed Michael Jennings' claim that his lack of experience will cost him when they meet at Birmingham's LG Arena on Saturday. The fight is an eliminator for the WBO welterweight title currently held by Philippine superstar Manny Pacquiao. "I've been sparring with world champions since I was a kid," Brook, who trains in Brendan Ingle's famous gym in Sheffield, told BBC Sport. "I'm number one and he's beneath me - he's going to get exposed." Brook, 24, is unbeaten in 21 fights and will be defending his British and fringe WBO intercontinental titles against former British champion Jennings, from Chorley. Apart from a brief period, Brook has been based at the Ingles' Wincobank gym since he started boxing as a child and where he has brushed shoulders with former world champions Naseem Hamed, Johnny Nelson and Junior Witter. However, Jennings is a former British champion himself and last February fought for the WBO welterweight title, although he was beaten inside five rounds by Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto. | 606: DEBATE |
"I've fought for a world title before, so I know what it takes at the top," said the 33-year-old Jennings, who has 36 wins and two defeats from 38 fights. "I look at Kell's record and there is not that kind of experience there. He's a good young fighter, but is he the best that I have faced? "He's not been beyond eight rounds before and that could be a key factor on Saturday night. "I've beaten some good fighters before. People have underestimated me for most of my career, so I'm not fussed that everyone is picking Kell to beat me. Let's see if they are still saying that after Saturday night." But rather than be cowed by Jennings' top-level experience, Brook is looking to use it as a positive, with one of his aims being to finish Jennings quicker than Cotto was able to. "That's at the back of my mind, to do a better job than Cotto did on him," said Brook, whose last fight was a sixth-round stoppage of experienced Pole Krzysztof Bienias in March. "I'm not looking past him, he's a good fighter, with good skills. But I've got age on my side, the power, the belief - I've never been beaten and I don't think I'm going to get beaten. "When he says he's more experienced, he should remember I've sparred with all the great champions from Sheffield." The Brook-Jennings match is one of seven title fights on Frank Warren's 'Magnificent Seven' Bill at the LG Arena and Brook says he is intent on being the standout performer on the night. "It's very important because it's a massive show, the biggest show this year, so I want to impress, shine out from the rest of the fighters on the bill," said Brook, who is trained by Dominic Ingle, Brendan's son. "It puts extra pressure on you fighting on the same bill as all these other big British names but it will bring the best out in me - fighting under pressure always makes me perform better and the better the opponent, I always seem to go up the gears."
