Paddy Barnes won an Olympic bronze medal in Beijing two years ago |
Belfast's Olympic boxing bronze medallist Paddy Barnes is aiming for European Championship gold in Moscow next week. The light-flyweight is currently at a training camp with the Irish team in the Ukraine ahead of the championships which start on 4 June. The Beijing Olympic Games bronze medal winner won't know his opening opponent until Saturday. "But I'm feeling good and I'm ready for the challenge ahead," said Barnes. "I am determined to bring another medal home to Belfast and Northern Ireland. "It's been a long time since an Irish fighter won a gold medal in the European Championships and I would like to see that happens this time around." Dublin featherweight Paul Griffin was the last Irish boxer to win European gold in 1991. The full Irish team is: 48Kg: Paddy Barnes (Holy Family) 51Kg: Declan Geraghty (Corinthians) 54Kg: John Joe Nevin (Cavan) 57Kg: Tyrone McCullough (Illies GG) 60Kg: Eric Donoyan (St Miichael's Athy) 64Kg: Ray Moylette (St Anne's) 69Kg: John Joe Joyce (St Michael's Athy) 75Kg: Darren O'Neill (Paulstown) 81Kg: Ken Egan (Neilstown)
