Malmesbury boxer Joe Hughes seeks big break

Hughes aims for Olympics

Malmesbury boxer Joe Hughes hopes to claim his first Amateur Boxing Association title when he fights Liam Taylor for the light-welterweight belt.

Hughes, who trains full-time thanks to sponsorship, is favourite to win Friday's bout.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed 57 wins in 69 bouts and has won an impressive string of junior titles.

Hughes told BBC Points West: "This is massive to me. If I win this, it could put me in the Commonwealth Games."

He added: "It could put me in the GB squad and then hopefully a shot at the Olympics.

"I've wanted to do this ever since I've been a kid and these championships are the biggest in domestic amateur boxing.

"I think I'm fit enough and I can't see myself tiring over the three rounds. It's only nine minutes and I could be ABA champion.

"I feel that I am good enough."

The fight takes place at York Hall in Bethnal Green in east London.
