Leicester's European super-bantamweight champion Rendall Munroe claimed the vacant Commonwealth title with a points victory over Isaac Nettey. Nettey started well catching his opponent in a lively opening round but as the fight wore on Munroe asserted himself on the fight. Munroe grew in confidence and soon started to outclass Ghanaian Nettey who proved to be an awkward opponent. The 28-year-old from Leicester won the fight on all three judges scorecards. They scored the fight 119-110 120-109 119-110 in favour of Munroe. | We hope to do a deal with Bernard Dunne now, the fight is there if he wants it |
Munroe, currently ranked fifth by the WBA, has only been beaten once, by Andy Morris in 2006 when he was outpointed in 12 rounds. He made a successful comeback, winning both English and European titles, and has now hopes for a world title fight against current WBA champion Bernard Dunne. "He was a tough awkward opponent," said Munroe. "We hope to do a deal with Bernard Dunne now," added Munroe's promoter Frank Maloney. "The fight is there if he wants it." Munroe takes his record to 19 wins in 20 fights with eight knockouts.
