Munroe targets Commonwealth title

European super-bantamweight champion Rendall Munroe will fight for the vacant Commonwealth title on 2 May.

The 28-year-old from Leicester will then target a world title shot, with the winner of Saturday's Bernard Dunne-Ricardo Cordoba fight a possibility.

They meet in Dublin and Munroe's manager Mike Shinfield told BBC Radio Leicester: "That's a strong possibility for Rendall, we're going over to watch.

"We are running out of viable opponents for the European title."

Munroe retained his European super-bantamweight title with a fine victory over Kiko Martinez at the Barnsley Metrodome in February.

It's on the cards that he'll be facing either Cordoba or Dunne

Shinfield says they will do everything possible to secure a world title shot.

He added: "We're going for the vacant Commonwealth title because it adds a second weight for Rendall and gives us a bit more bargaining power when you go to the table discussing bursars for world title fights too.

"It's quite likely, it's on the cards that he'll be facing Cordoba or Dunne because a world title fight is obviously the next step for Rendall.

"But unless you can entice them over here with quite a lot of money, you've got to go to places like Panama or Colombia, which is the last thing we want to have to do."

Munroe will fight for the Commonwealth title in Sunderland on the same night Ricky Hatton fights Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas.

"That fight will probably be against an African and there are two or three names in the hat at the moment, it's all being negotiated right now," said Shinfield.

"The show that Rendall's on will be the English half of the television programme that has the Ricky Hatton fight later."
