Haskins ready for his title shot

I'm a better boxer now - Haskins

Bristol boxer Lee Haskins is to fight for the British super-flyweight title at Wigan's Robin Park on Friday night.

The 25-year-old former Commonwealth flyweight champion will take on the holder, Doncaster's Andy Bell.

Haskins lost his last tilt at a British title with a seventh-round bantamweight stoppage against Ian Napa in September 2007 at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

But Haskins told BBC Points West: "I'm a lot better boxer now. I've calmed down a lot more in the ring."

To bring the belt back to Bristol would be fantastic

And Haskins admits he will take on what he has learnt from past defeats.

"He is a good fighter - a good technician. And I'm not going to try and knock him out like I usually do.

"We had problems making flyweight before. But I've trained really hard and the weight has fallen off this time. I was underneath the weight last week and it was fantastic."

Haskins admits that the ultimate prize would be to bring a Lonsdale belt back to Bristol - and become the first fighter from the city to win a British title since middleweight Glenn Catley 10 years ago.

"To bring that belt back to Bristol would just be fantastic," he said. "It would mean the biggest thing ever.

"And to make a defence in Bristol would be even better.

"To fight in front of your own crowd, you're own people, that's amazing."
