Haskins won the Commonwealth flyweight belt in 2006 (Chris Sanigar) |
Lee Haskins has been given the chance to become the first Bristolian boxer to win a British title for a decade. Glenn Catley was the last such fighter, beating Neville Brown for the British middleweight title in 1998. Haskins has been installed as mandatory challenger for the super-flyweight belt held by Nottingham's Andy Bell. "It's such a big thing to win, and it's a big opportunity for him," manager Chris Sanigar told BBC Radio Bristol. "He's got the chance he deserves." Haskins has already fought for a British title, losing to Ian Napa in September last year. That was at bantamweight, when the 24-year-old fighter was giving away weight to his opponent. | I don't think it's his last chance, but it's probably his best |
"This is a better weight for him," Sanigar added. "This is at three pounds lighter and we're expecting a win from him. "If he puts his heart and soul into his training regime I'm sure he'll come through ok." Haskins won the Commonwealth flyweight title in 2006, but has since lost twice fighting at bantamweight. In his most recent bout he beat Jamie McDonnell in March, in the eliminator to contest the British super-flyweight belt. "He did well and won a points victory, winning the last two rounds to win the fight," Sanigar said. "That was a complete reverse to his two previous fights when he was running out of steam." Sanigar said it was unlikely Haskins would be able to rely on a home crowd for arguably the biggest fight of his career. "Realistically, I think we will have to go to Nottingham because Andy is the champion and it's his first defence. "I'd have to say that's fair, but if we could get enough financial sponsorship to make it work then we could say we would rather it go to purse bids and we want it here in Bristol. "This is a great opportunity for him. I don't think it's his last chance, but it's probably his best."
