Edwards to stay on board for 2012

Terry Edwards and James DeGale
Edwards played a big part in DeGale's gold-medal success in Beijing

Terry Edwards has been assured of his future as the head coach of GB's Boxing Performance Programme following a meeting with the sport's new lead body.

British boxers surpassed their Beijing Games target under Edwards, with a gold for James DeGale leading the way.

Responsibility for his team was then passed to the British Amateur Boxing Association, chaired by Derek Mapp, as part of an overhaul for London 2012.

But a "cordial and successful" meeting calmed Edwards's fear over his role.

"Derek and I discussed the detailed programme and structure going forwards and I feel reassured of my inclusion in the future," said Edwards in a statement.

Mapp added: "I confirmed to Terry that I would very much like to see his knowledge, experience, contribution and excellence in coaching to be retained as an important asset in our drive for future boxing success, until at least 2012."

606: DEBATE
For all Britain's success in Beijing, matters have not always been so impressive outside the ring for amateur boxing.

Edwards came in for criticism when his charge Frankie Gavin failed to make the lightweight limit and was sent home from the Beijing Games, while Billy Joe Saunders was suspended for lewd behaviour.

The coach said at the time he was "extremely disillusioned" by the allegations against Saunders and questioned the timing of the reports, which were released in the build-up to the gold medal fight involving DeGale.

However, Mapp and Baba have always been keen to keep Edwards on board, and part of the new lead body's responsibilities are thought to include the appointment of a new performance director to oversee all aspects of the programme, leaving Edwards to concentrate on coaching.
