Sexton got his tactics right on the night |
Norwich's Sam Sexton pocketed the biggest payday of his career by winning the Prizefighter event in Newcastle. The 24-year-old heavyweight edged out Pele Reid and Luke Simpkin before stopping Chris Burton in the last round of the final bout to take home 25,000. Sexton told BBC Radio Norfolk: "I got through the first fight, which I was most nervous about being the first fight out on the night. "After that I felt so confident that I felt I just couldn't be beaten." Sexton paced himself well in the first two fights before going out all guns blazing in the final against Burton. The win moved Sexton up 127 places in the world rankings to 71 and up to eighth in the British list. It is a result which trainer Graham Everett believes will have made the boxing world sit up and take notice. "He's done himself so much good in the public eye, I got texts last night from people like Danny Williams, all sorts of people saying how well he boxed," said Everett. "To come back from a defeat last time out and have three tremendous victories on the same night, we're all delighted."
