Sexton eyes Prizefighter victory

Sam Sexton
Sexton has been defeated just once in eight professional fights

Norwich's Sam Sexton is aiming to take the first prize of 20,000 at Friday's Prizefighter event in Newcastle.

The 24-year-old heavyweight faces Pele Reid, 35, in the opening three-round quarter final, with an overall winner to be decided on the night.

Sexton told BBC Radio Norfolk: "It's totally diferent to anything we've done before, it's going to be tough.

"Usually I prepare to pace myself, but there'll be no time for that, it'll be straight off from round one."

Prizefighter is a new format devised by promoter Barry Hearn's Matchroom Sport, with eight fighters contesting the 20,000 prize over the course of one evening.

Friday's event at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle is just the second of its kind and Sexton is hoping it will be a great way to showcase his talents.

"There's excellent coverage of Prizefighter on television and radio, it's just going to push me forward at a quicker pace," he said.

"I'm going in there to win, hopefully after that they can push me on a lot quicker towards a British title."

Speaking about opponent Reid, Sexton, who is the youngest fighter on the Newcastle bill, added: "He's got 17 knockouts from 19 wins, we're not taking that for granted at all.

"But I'm the younger man, hopefully that can take it's toll on him."
