Woods full of praise for Witter

Clinton Woods says fellow British world champion Junior Witter has not received the praise he deserves for his latest WBC light-welterweight defence.

Witter knocked out Guyanese Vivian Harris in seven rounds to retain his title in Doncaster two weeks ago.

And Woods, who defends his IBF light-heavyweight crown in Sheffield on Saturday told BBC Sport: "I feel for Junior, he should have got more credit.

"Harris was a genuine world champion and Witter totally outclassed him."

Woods says New York-based Harris had a solid pedigree, having defended the WBA belt three times, but was made to look very ordinary by Witter.

"I was really impressed with the way Junior dealt with anything Harris had to offer. He never let him get going and finished him off really well," he said.

"It was great because it means he's stayed up there with our other world champions like Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe and shows there's good strength in depth in our sport."

Indeed, Woods was keen to bury the hatchet with his old domestic rival Calzaghe.

The pair have been continually linked with an all-British showdown at 175lbs, if Welsh WBO champion Calzaghe ever decides to step up from super-middleweight.

Woods said: "I don't care what what anyone says, for me he's still one of the best boxers in the world and he deserves his own respect.

"What Joe's done is brilliant but for me Witter's performance against Harris was one of the best I've seen recently, just fantastic."

The Yorkshireman is gunning to match Witter's recent exploits with an equally emphatic defence of his own when he faces old adversary Julio Cesar Gonzalez in the Hallam FM Arena this weekend.

Woods beat the the gritty Mexican over the full distance in the same venue two years ago but warned: "I''d love to say I'm going to knock him out, but I can see it going 12 rounds again.

"Gonzalez is as tough as they come and I've really got my work cut out to defend my title."
