Woods will make his Vegas debut in June against Gonzalez |
Clinton Woods will defend his IBF light heavyweight title against Mexican Julio Gonzalez in Las Vegas on 23 June, report BBC Radio Sheffield. The two fighters last met in September 2005 in Woods' hometown of Sheffield, when he was awarded a points decision.
The fight sees Woods make his Las Vegas debut on the same bill as Ricky Hatton, who fights Jose Luis Castillo for the fringe IBO light welterweight belt.
Woods, 34, is returning to the ring after surgery on a torn arm tendon.
The Sheffield fighter injured his arm following a battling defence against Glen Johnson last September.
Dennis Hobson, who promotes both Woods and Hatton, says the injury has been a setback for Woods but says the Las Vegas showcase is the perfect way to get back on track.
"After the Johnson fight, in a way Clinton lost a little bit of momentum because of the injury," Hobson told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"That's cleared up now - although not as quickly as we wanted it to.
"We've got the massive bonus with Ricky fighting in Vegas too and Clinton will be a double-header on the same bill.
"I always wanted to showcase Clinton in the States as he is a completely different fighter."
Woods' records stands at 40 wins in 44 fights with three losses and one draw.
