Evander Holyfield stepped up his quest for a fifth world heavyweight title with a third-round stoppage of fellow American Vinny Maddalone in Texas. The 44-year-old won for the third time in seven months as he maintained his comeback run in Corpus Christi.
Maddalone was cut by a clash of heads in round one and took some heavy blows until his corner threw in the towell.
Holyfield was inactive for nearly two years after a medical suspension but has fought three times since in Texas.
"The Real Deal" will turn 45 in October, the same age as George Foreman was when he stopped Michael Moorer to regain the heavyweight title in 1994.
Frenchman Jean-Marc Mormeck regained his WBC and WBA cruiserweight titles with a unanimous decision over Jamaican defending champion O'Neil Bell in Paris. The two squared up again in the post-fight press conference after Mormeck declared: "I don't like O'Neil Bell but I have tremendous respect for him as a fighter."
Ukraine's Wladimir Sidorenko retained his WBA bantamweight title with a second draw against Panama's Ricardo Cordoba in Suttgart, Germany on Saturday. Mexico's WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon retained his title with a unanimous decision over Gerry Penalosa of the Phillipines on Saturday.
