Enzo Maccarinelli has relinquished his WBU cruiserweight belt after three years and seven successful defences. The Swansea man, 25, won the interim WBO crown when he stopped Marcelo Dominguez in Cardiff last month.
He will be handed the WBO title if champion Johnny Nelson does not face face him in the autumn, with 14 October a possible date for the showdown.
"The WBU was my stepping-stone belt, now I have my eyes on bigger things," Maccarinelli told the South Wales Echo.
"It looks like the Nelson fight could be on the 14 October show in Manchester, but I've not heard anything definite.
"First we have to see if Nelson signs up for it."
Sheffield man Nelson, 39, has held the belt for seven years, but a serious knee injury in March scuppered a July bout with Maccarinelli and threatened to end his career.
He has a record of 45-12-2 (9 KOs) and has not lost since 1995, while big-punching Maccarinelli's card reads 24-1 (18 KOs).
