James Toney's December bout against fellow US heavyweight Rob Calloway has been called off as a clash with new WBC champion Hasim Rahman looks possible. Toney's promoter Dan Goosen said talks could see Toney take on Rahman, voted champion after Vitali Klitschko's retirement, in February or March.
Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali's brother, and Kazak veteran Oleg Maskaev are also possible next foes for Rahman.
But promoter Don King is also reported to be backing a Toney-Rahman match-up.
Toney recently served a 90-day drugs ban after testing positive for steroid abuse after beating WBA heavyweight champion John Ruiz in April.
The 36-year-old denied knowingly taking any banned substance but was stripped of the title which reverted to Ruiz.
Toney, a former three-weight world champion, returned to the ring on 2 October with a unanimous points decision over Dominick Guinn in Reno.
