Former World Boxing Association heavyweight champion John Ruiz has been given his title back after James Toney, who beat him, failed a drugs test. Ruiz retired following the points loss on 30 April but mysteriously un-retired just before Toney's post-fight test came back positive for steroids.
WBA rules state that a former champion regains his title if a fight is deemed a no-contest, as happened in this case.
Ruiz, known as "The Quiet Man", has twice been world heavyweight champion.
"Based on the actions of the New York State Athletic Commission and the test results on which the Commission relied, the WBA must. . . reinstate John Ruiz as the champion," said a WBA statement.
Toney was suspended 90 days and fined $10,000 by the NYSAC, in addition to being barred from fighting for the WBA title for two years.
