Englishman Conway was confirmed as Arthur's new opponent for the British super-featherweight title on Saturday after Limond pulled out having sustained a perforated eardrum during sparring. The all-Scottish fight was to be the main support to the WBO world featherweight title fight between Julio Pablo Chacon and Scott Harrison. It had been feared that the bout at Glasgow's Braehead Arena would be downgraded after Limond's withdrawal. But Dewsbury southpaw Conway has agreed to take up the opportunity of a surprise shot at winning the vacant Lonsdale Belt. Arthur told BBC Scotland Conway was a very credible replacement. "It's a hard job, maybe as hard if not harder than the previous one," added Arthur. "This opponent has a good record and this fight would probably have had to have happened after Limond and I had fought. "Conway would have probably been in line to fight for the title anyway, so this should really be my first defence." Three stoppages Twenty-five-year-old Conway, part of Scottish manager Tommy Gilmour's stable, was approved as an opponent by the British Boxing Board of Control on Wednesday. Hartlepool-born Conway has been a professional for seven years, winning 26 of his 30 contests. Just three of those victories have been stoppages, but he has won his last six fights. His last victory, over Steve Robinson, sent the former WBO world featherweight champion into retirement. But Arthur is in no doubt that the illustrious belt will be staying in Scotland after Saturday night's fight. Paisley welterweight Kevin McIntyre's British title eliminator was called off when Birmingham opponent Malcolm Melvin withdrew from Saturday's Braehead bill. |
