Oscar de la Hoya was a satisfied and relaxed man having stopped Fernando Vargas in the 11th round of their world title fight here in Las Vegas. De la Hoya, ahead on two of the judges scorecards going into the 11th round, knocked down his younger opponent and threw a barrage of blows to force a stoppage.
Now the owner of the WBC and WBA world titles, De la Hoya admitted he was delighted with the outcome of the fight. "It was a very satisfying night - it felt pretty good," said De la Hoya. The build-up to the fight had seen Vargas constantly needle De la Hoya and the winner had plenty to say afterwards. "He was just talking so much trash," he added. "It's like Tiger Woods talking bad about Jack Nicklaus - it just wouldn't make sense. "Tonight, I let my fists do the talking." De la Hoya's trainer Floyd Mayweather Snr gave his pupil a B+ for his performance. "I think Oscar did a brilliant job," said the outspoken trainer. "He didn't do everything I wanted him to do, I know he can do better." Resignation Vargas did not attend the press conference, having been ordered to go to the local hospital - a routine procedure for fighters who have been knocked out. But it emerged that his conditioner/nutritionist immediately resigned after the fight because of differences of opinion over Vargas' training. De la Hoya's next opponent is likely to be Sugar Shane Mosley, who won when the pair first met in June 2000. "I can see him (De la Hoya) improving a little bit," Mosley told BBC Sport Online. "The key to the fight was when he started to throw the left hook." |
