| Wednesday, 22 May, 2002, 16:57 GMT 17:57 UK Audley must keep busy Williams believes Audley has a stamina problem BBC Sport Online columnist Danny Williams watched Audley Harrison's win over Mark Krence and has some positive things to say about the Olympic champion. For the first two rounds, I thought Audley boxed exceptionally - he had skill, showed good handspeed and good defence - but after that he started to tire. For a while, I've said that Audley has a stamina problem and cannot punch, but I think people are seeing this now.
He was puffing badly and it was only a six round contest. However, I have to say that technically, he boxed very well. Mark Krence was not a difficult opponent - his record made him look like one, but he definitely wasn't. He is not a bad boxer, but he is too small to be a heavyweight. Nowadays, to be a top heavy, you have to be above 17 stone, unless you are exceptional like Mike Tyson or Evander Holyfield. Krence is too light and his punches just didn't tell on Audley. If he was a bit heavier, he would have given Harison a lot of trouble. For the future, Audley just needs to keep busy and God willing he will not get any more injuries. By the end of the year, I think you will start to see a big improvement in Audley - but he will be 31 in October, so time is against him. He definitely needs to pick up the pace in his career and he needs to be fighting better fighters each time. |
