Olympic champion Gunnell started the 10km Yorkshire Coast Road Race |
Scarborough Athletic Club's second 10km run raised £11,000 to be split between a range of charities and the club's running track project. Nearly 1,200 people took part in the main race and 360 in the fun run. Olympic champion Sally Gunnell, who set off both races, told BBC Radio York: "It was a wonderful race, it's about getting our kids active." Race director Chris Clayton added: "The aim is to build a track and field facility for Scarborough." Both races started from the town's Spa Complex, with Gunnell running in the main race after setting it off. "It's a family day out and it was wonderful to see all those people lined up down there for the fun run," she added. The event will help Scarborough Athletics Club towards the £500,000 it needs for the new running track. "We've got no track and field (facility) for our kids to run on, the nearest ones are in York, Guisborough and Hull," Clayton added.
