Zoe Derham can break hammer record, says Lorraine Shaw

Gloucester hammer thrower Zoe Derham can break the British record - according to her coach and current record holder Lorraine Shaw.

Shaw set the record of 68.93 metres at Loughborough in 2003. Bristol-born Derham's personal best is 68.63 metres, also set at Loughborough in 2008.

"She's more than capable, and should have done it two or three years ago" Shaw told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

"I've love her to do it. She needs to up her game but I'm confident she can."

Derham will compete in her third Commonwealth Games in Delhi next month.

She finished eighth in Manchester in 2002 - when Shaw won the gold - and fifth in Melbourne in 2006, and Shaw says a medal in Delhi is a realistic target.

"Zoe is up against three Canadians who are coached by [1972 Olympic Champion] Dr Anatoly Bondarchuk. He's very knowledgeable.

"On the other hand, it's all on the day and I think Zoe can cope with the pressure now and come into her own."
