Zoe Derham will be made to wait for her place at the Commonwealth Games despite winning the English title in Gateshead. The 29-year-old hammer thrower won with 64.26 metres but had her hopes dashed as the event was not deemed as a trial. "My coach heard from another athlete that it had changed from the trials to just the English championships," Derham told BBC Radio Gloucestershire. "It is a bit frustrating, it was quite an expensive trip for something we didn't necessarily need to do." Derham, who does not receive any lottery funding, decided at the start of the season to target the Commonwealth Games in India rather than the European Championships. | All my competitions this year have been over the qualification mark and I'm still ranked the UK's number one |
She is currently the British number one and is ranked third in the Commonwealth. Derham will now opt for a period of training rather than competition, but is still hopeful of being selected when the team is announced on August 18. "I'm quite confident that I should be alright for Delhi," she said. "All my competitions this year have been over the qualification mark and I'm still ranked the UK's number one at the moment, so I'm quite confident that I should be alright for my place on the team."
