Brewer made his international debut indoors in 2007 |
Gloucestershire duo James Brewer and Emily Pidgeon both picked up medals at the European Under-23 Championships. Brewer took silver in the 1500m in Lithuania while Pidgeon claimed a bronze in the women's 5000m. Brewer told the UK athletics website: "The race went off quickly but it wasn't really fast at any point. Nobody wanted to take it on. "On the last bend I was trying to relax and stay strong and hold on. I came here ranked third and I was second." The two medals were part of an unprecedented haul of 18 for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team. Pidgeon recorded a season's best performance and her second fastest time ever, and was delighted with her achievement. "I'm pleased I've justified my place to the selectors," she said. "I was instructed to make sure I stayed in the top six all the time. "I knew I could get the time easily in the right race. I'm really, really, happy." Brewer and Pidgeon will find out on 28 July if they have been selected for the World Championships, which take place in Berlin in August.
