Lee Garland, Mark Mercier and Steve Dawes were the top three finishers

Steve Dawes was the first man home in Guernsey's Inter-insular Cross Country trials at Delancey Park on Sunday.

Dawes finished in a time of exactly 32 minutes, 96 seconds ahead of Lee Garland with Mark Mercier in third.

The six-mile race was held over five laps of the new St Sampson's course, which will also be used for the Inter-insular in late March 2009.

Dawes told BBC Guernsey: "There's quite a few little climbs and twists and turns... it's a good course."

Sarah Mercier won the shorter women's race and Paul Ingrouille was the first veteran to finish.
