Merrien still came away with a gold, despite his disappointing run |
Guernsey's Lee Merrien has apologised to his Newham & Essex Beagles team-mates for the way he ran at the English Cross Country Championships. Merrien, who ran for Great Britain at the European Championships last December, was 13th on Hampstead Heath as his club took the overall title. "I apologised for my performance," he told BBC Guernsey. "It was the first time out for my club and I was sorry that I performed below my own expectation levels." However, he says he team-mates did not mind as they secured the club's first victory in the championships for a century. "They were still pleased because I was the second scorer in and they still won the overall team event for the men so they were happy with the contribution," he said. "From an individual point of view it's disappointing but you just put these things behind you and move onto the next thing."
