Guernsey's Lee Merrien claimed seventh place in the 5000m at the British Olympic Trials in Birmingham. His time (14mins 3.84secs) at the Alexander Stadium was nine and a half seconds slower than winner Andy Vernon. Tom Druce just missed out on a place in the final of the 400m. He finished fifth in his semi final in a time of 47.69, one place off making the final. He ran 47.96 in his heat to qualify for the semi-finals as the fastest third-place finisher. In the 100m hurdles, Kylie Robilliard ran 14.56 to finish fifth in her heat, over a second behind the winner while, in the 800m, Helen Hadjam finished seventh in her heat in a time of 2 minutes 11.76 seconds.
