Turnbull competes in next weekend's Irish Indoor Championships |
Gareth Turnbull finished a disappointing sixth in the mile race at Friday's Tyson Invitational indoor meeting in Arkansas. Turnbull clocked a personal best of 3:58.88 in New York last weekend but he came home in 4:02.47 which left him well adrift of winner Mark Fountain.
Australian Fountain won the race in emphatic fashion in 3:55.58.
Alistair Cragg showed that he is still grappling for form by finishing third in the 3000m in 7:43.30.
2004 European Indoor Champion Cragg was over three seconds behind Canadian winner Kevin Sullivan (7:40.17) who pipped American Matt Tegenkamp (7:43.25).
Ireland's other former European Indoor 3000m champion Mark Carroll took fifth in 7:52.07.
Turnbull acknowledged that he was disappointed with his run.
"It was not a great run. I got left to 'pace' the chasing bunch as the winner (Fountain) was away and clear," Turnbull told BBC Sport.
"Then I got overtaken by the bunch with 200m to go. I have had better nights."
It remains to be seen now whether Turnbull will run the 1500m or drop down to the 800m at next week's Irish Indoor Championships in Belfast.
Turnbull has been planning to run the 800m at the Odyssey Arena but he now may feel compelled to run his specialist longer event in order to secure his place in next month's European Indoor Championships.
James Nolan and Liam Reale are also hoping to represent Ireland in the 1500m in Birmingham.
