Gareth Turnbull had an impressive run in New York |
Gareth Turnbull continued his build-up to the Irish Indoor Championships later this month by producing an impressive run in the US on Saturday night. Turnbull was comfortably under the four-minute barrier for the mile when taking second place in 3:58.88 at the Armory indoor meeting in New York.
The Belfastman finished second behind Ethiopia's Berhanu Alemu.
The 27-year-old St Malachy's athlete described his performance as a decent season opener.
"There were lots of cobwebs but I was happy enough with the run," said Turnbull.
Alemu competed for Ethiopia over 800m at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Those behind Turnbull included Britain's James Thie who took seventh in 4:03.72.
Turnbull has not had many previous indoor mile outings and his previous personal best was 4:07.59.
