Jason Smyth failed to progress from his 100m heat at the World Junior Championships in Beijing on Tuesday. The City of Derry sprinter was slow out of the blocks and he finished fifth in 10.85 seconds.
Smyth was left three places outside the two automatic qualifcation spots and around a fifth of a second away from being one of the four fastest losers.
Irish pair Kalyn Sheehan (women's 400 hurdles) and Davy McCarthy (800m) also failed to qualify from their heats.
Sheehan ran 51.76 to finish seventh in her heat while McCarthy was sixth in 1.52.41 minutes.
North Down athlete Amy Foster will compete in the 200m while Lagan Valley's Chris Quinn goes in the 400m hurdles.
Ireland's six-strong team is completed by long jumper Kelly Proper.
