Sprinter Amy Foster hopes that a good indoor season can be the springboard towards qualification for this year's World Junior Championships in Beijing. Foster will compete in the Irish Indoor Championships at the Odyssey Arena on 18/19 February before going on to the AAA's U20 Indoors a fortnight later.
"The indoors is a good indicator of how my outdoor season is going to go so I'm looking forward to it," says Amy.
Amy won a silver medal over 100m at last year's European Youth Olympics.
This year's World Junior Championships will take place in Beijing, the venue for the next Olympic Games, although Amy plays down any suggestion that she could be in line for two visits to the Chinese capital over the next three years.
"The world juniors in August are a target. I'm aiming to get the qualifying times which are 24.3 for the 200m and 11.9 for the 100m. Hopefully they are within my reach."
Indeed, given her progress last year it would be a major surprise if she doesn't get the times.
For example, for 100m best set last year is 11.93 - only .03 outside the world junior standard.
The lower sixth form student at Glenlola Collegiate School in Bangor states that she doesn't have a preference for either of the two outdoor sprints although informed local observers of the sport have predicted that 200m will emerge as her stronger event.
What is in no doubt is that Amy is the currently the top junior talent in Northern Ireland athletics.
