Derval O'Rourke and Kirsten Bolm won joint silver medals |
Ireland's Derval O'Rourke claimed a superb silver medal in the women's 100 metres hurdles final at the European Championships in Gothenburg. O'Rourke led for most of the race and was only overhauled by favourite Susanna Kallur in the final 20 metres.
Swede Kallur won in 12.59 with O'Rourke clocking a new Irish record of 12.72 - the same time as German Kirsten Bolm.
Bolm was initially declared third but was later awarded a joint silver with O'Rourke following a German protest.
Bolm was given the same time O'Rourke whose previous best time was 12.85.
O'Rourke hadn't looked a likely medallist after squeezing into the decider earlier in the evening by finishing third in her semi-final.
The World Indoor Champion clocked 12.94 in the semi-final which left her behind Kallur (12.76) and France's Adrianna Lamalle (12.93).
Deirdre Ryan was 13th in the high jump with a disappointing mark of 1.84m.
Ryan had equalled her Irish record of 1.92m in Tuesday's qualifying to qualify for the final but she had two failures at 1.84m before bowing out of the event while attempting 1.88.
