Anna Boyle was fifth in her 200m heat
Anna Boyle exited from the 200 metres at the European Championships after finishing fifth in her first round heat in a time of 23.94 seconds on Thursday.

Ciara Sheehy pulled up midway through her heat with a hamstring injury.

Irish runner Derval O'Rourke qualified for the semi-finals of the 100m hurdles after she impressed in her heat, finishing second in a time of 13.03.

Joanne Cuddihy, hampered by a lane one draw, was eighth in the final of the women's 400m in a time of 51.46.

The tall Cuddihy struggled to deal with the tight bend and her time was .37secs outside the personal best she had set in Wednesday's semi-final.

Bulgaria's Vanya Stambolova took the title in 49.85 ahead of Russians Tatyana Veshkurova (50.15) and Olga Zaytseva (50.28) while Britain's Nicola Sanders (50.87) finished sixth.

Boyle's time was .19 outsider her personal best for the 200m.

O'Rourke finished second in heat two in the hurdles first round behind Russia's Aleksandra Antonova after running a solid race.

Medal hope Alistair Cragg qualified comfortably for Sunday's final of the 5000 metres, finishing third in the first semi-final in a time of 13:50.12.

Paul Hession missed out on a place in the men's 200m final when he finished seventh in the second semi-final.

Hession was drawn in lane two but he will have been disappointed with his time of 21.09 - .29 outside his best time on Wednesday.

Both Roisin McGettigan and Fionnuala Britton failed to progress to the heat stages of the women's 3000m steeplechase.

McGettigan was unlucky not to qualify from her heat as she finished in fifth place in a time of 9:47.37.

Irish 800m hopefuls David Campbell and Thomas Chamney well well outside qualification for the semi-finals of their event after clocking 1:48.70 and 1:50.12 in Thursday's first round.
