Anna Boyle shows her disappointment after Tuesday's race |
Anna Boyle bowed out of the women's 100 metres at the European Championships on Tuesday morning after finishing fifth in her first round heat. Boyle's time of 11.60 was .11secs outside her personal best set and .15 adrift of what she would have required to progress to the semi-finals.
Joanne Cuddihy produced a composed run to safely qualify for Wednesday's 400 metres semi-finals in Gothenburg.
However, David Gillick finished last in his 400m semi-final in a poor 46.84.
Cuddihy clocked 51.41 seconds to finish second in her heat which left her .52 behind gold medal favourite Olga Zaytseva in the opening heat.
However, Cuddihy was fifth fastest of the qualifiers for the semi-finals and she looks capable of progressing from the semi-finals for Thursday's decider.
Her semi-final opponents will again include Zaytseva plus another Russian Tatyana Vekskurova and Bulgaria's Mariyana Dimitrova but Cuddihy goes into the race as the fourth fastest in the field.
Gillick, European Indoor Champion last year, never got into the mix in the second men's 400m semi-final and was a distant last of the seven finishers.
France's Leslie Djhone won in 45.23 and the fourth place qualifier Britain's Tim Benjamin clocked a time equal to Gillick's personal best of 45.67.
Belgian medal hope Kim Gevaert won Boyle's 100m heat in 11.19 ahead of Russia's Yekaterina Grigoryeva (11.27), Britain's Anyika Onuora (11.38) and Poland's Daria Okyski (11.45).
Boyle's time left her 21st overall while the other Irish entrant Emily Maher did not make it to the start line after pulling a hamstring in her warm-up.
The Dunloy woman didn't get out of the blocks particularly well which ended any prospect of her producing the lifetime best that she needed to progress to the semi-finals.
Deirdre Ryan produced a superb performance to reach Friday's final of the women's high jump by equalling her Irish record of 1.92m.
Martin Fagan finished a creditable 11th in the men's 10,000m final in a time of 28:54.04 after contending for the first half of the race.
