Boyle sprints to new indoor mark

Derval O'Rourke and Anna Boyle had plenty to celebrate in Belfast
Anna Boyle smashed the national indoor 60 metres record at the Irish Indoor Championships at the Odyssey Arena.

Boyle's new mark of 7.32 secs cut 0.05 off Ailish McSweeney's existing record and left her ahead of Amandine Aliou (7.34) and Emily Maher (7.36).

Derval O'Rourke maintained her superb form with a world-class Irish record of 7.90 when winning the 60m hurdles.

O'Rourke finished a remarkable 0.16 ahead of the world outdoor silver medallist Delloreen Ennis-London.

A new national record looked on in the 60m after the fast semi-finals but there was some doubt over whether Boyle and Maher would set the new mark.

"After the semi-final, I felt so comfortable after running 7.38 and I thought I would run a wee bit faster but I didn't expect to run 7.32," Boyle told BBC Sport.

"I'm delighted to have won but from now on, it's all about the outdoors in Melbourne so Ive got to leave this behind me now."

Boyle has little time to celebrate her success as she departs for Australia on Monday ahead of her Commonwealth Games challenge where she will compete in the 100m and 200m.

Overseas stars Trecia Smith (triple jump) and Allenye Francique (400m) produced classy displays to win their events.

World outdoor champion Smith produced a leap of 14.23m which edged out Yamille Aldama of the Sudan by five centimetres.

Francique won the men's 400m in 46.19 with Irish athlete Dave McCarthy taking second in 47.43.

After qualifying for the 60m final, youngster Amy Foster delighted the local fans by winning the 200m in 24.90.

Other local winners included Joe McAllister (3000m 8:16.96), Lyndsey Monteith (800m 2:12.70) and Eva Massey (shot 15.54m).

Paul Brizzel clocked the same time as winner Leon Baptiste (6.83) in the men's 60m final but he was adjudged to have been pipped in a photo-finish.

The partially-sighted Jason Smyth took fourth in the sprint to suggest that he is in good form for his upcoming challenge at the World Indoor Paralympics.
