Yelling sees Euro title slip away
Hayley Yelling
Yelling finished 21 seconds behind the winner
Britain's Hayley Yelling failed in her bid to defend the European Cross Country title in the Netherlands.

Yelling finished sixth as GB failed to win the senior women's team title for the first time in three years.

The women's race was won by Dutch runner Lornah Kiplagat, who came home in a time of 19 minutes and 55 seconds.

Germany's Sabrina Mockenhaupt finished second in 20:00 minutes, and Johanna Nilsson of Sweden was a second behind in Tilburg.

Yelling finished 21 seconds behind the winner with her sister-in-law Liz two places further back as Britain took silver.

Kate Reed finished 16th and Natalie Harvey 24th to give the British squad a total of 54 points, just two shy of beating Russia but well clear of France who totalled 73.

Yelling admitted afterwards that she had got her tactics wrong.

"I didn't want to lead because I thought it was going to be quick and I might fade," she said after failing to follow when Liz hit the front on the first lap.

"I'm so used to being in the lead, I tend to lose my rhythm when I'm chasing.

The best is to come - I'm aged 16 and came second. I am already looking forward to a re-match next year

"I should have done what I always do. I would have liked to have been in the medals but I'm still fairly pleased."

Earlier in the day, teenager Emily Pidgeon finished second in her race to lead the Norwich Union Great Britain junior side to victory.

She finished two seconds behind Romania's Ancuta Bobocel with Morag MacLarty sixth, Stephanie Twell seventh and Sian Edwards 15th to secure team honours.

In the junior men's race, Hungary's Barnabas Bene edged Britain's Andy Vernon in a time of 18:41. Vernon was a second behind.

Mohammed Farah, 22, led a very inexperienced British men's senior side to a hard earned seventh place in their 9.8km race.

Farah, junior silver medallist four years ago, was the first Briton home in 21st position as France won a third successive team crown ahead of Spain and the Ukraine.

Ukrainian Sergiy Lebid won a sixth individual gold medal, finishing 12 seconds clear of Spain's Alberto Garcia in a time of 27:09, with Driss Maazouzi from France third in 27:26.
