Radcliffe to lead England charge
Paula Radcliffe in action in Helsinki
Paula Radcliffe will lead England's gold medal challenge at next year's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, while Kelly Holmes may also make the trip.

Radcliffe and Holmes were named in an 80-strong England squad by selectors.

Radcliffe has been selected to defend her 5000m title as well as the 10,000m but will only compete in one event.

Holmes, who has been suffering from an Achilles injury, has been named for the 1500m and 800m but may not confirm her participation until next month.

The double Olympic champion has contested only two races this summer because of injury.

I've told the selectors I will give it until mid-November to make my decision whether to compete

"We'll have to wait and see whether I am fit enough," said Holmes, who won the 1500m at the Games in Manchester three years ago.

"I've told the selectors I will give it until mid-November to make my decision whether to compete.

"If I'm not fit enough that will give them enough time to pick somebody else who will have plenty of time to prepare for the Games."

Radcliffe, who won the marathon at last month's World Championships in Helsinki, has already announced she will only compete in one race in Melbourne but remains uncertain which it will be.

Also named in the squad, triple-jumper Ashia Hansen will hope the incentive of a third consecutive Commonwealth crown will spur her further in her fight against the knee injury she suffered in May last year.

Donna Fraser has been selected to double up in the 200m and 400m; Natasha Danvers-Smith will return from giving birth to a son last December to contend the 400m hurdles while Kelly Sotherton and Jade Johnson go head-to-head in the long jump.

Among the men, Jason Gardener and Mark Lewis-Francis have been selected for the 100m, while Darren Campbell is on the team for the 200m and the 4x100m relay, and Chris Rawlinson has been given the chance to defend his Commonwealth crown in the 400m hurdles.

The the most prominent absence is Nathan Douglas, who set a personal best of 17.64m at the Commonwealth trials in July, with Phillips Idowu and Larry Achike instead making the trip.

2002 long jump champion, Nathan Morgan, has also failed to make the squad.
