Hayley Yelling's win was not enough for Britain to retain the team title |
Hayley Yelling produced a superb sprint finish to take the European cross country title in Heringsdorf. Yelling upped the pace in the final 30 metres to beat Poland's Justyna Bak by just a second while Jo Pavey was third.
Ukrainian Sergei Lebid won the men's race for the fourth straight year after holding off Juan Carlos de le Ossa.
However, Great Britain surrendered the team title they won last year as they ended on 43 points while Portugal claimed gold with 38 points.
Host nation Germany ended up well behind on 97 points.
The British junior men's team came third behind Russia and Ireland while the junior women's team won silver behind winners Romania.
