Sprint stars shine in Sheffield
Justin Gatlin
Gatlin came through late to win the 200m
World bronze medallist Kim Collins and double world champion Justin Gatlin took the sprint honours at the Norwich Union British Grand Prix.

Collins took advantage of Maurice Greene's disqualification to win the 100m, while double world champion Justin Gatlin nicked the 200m.

In the women's 200m, teenage world champion Allyson Felix beat world 100m winner Lauryn Williams in some style.

Kelly Holmes could finish only ninth in the 800m, her last track run in the UK.

Holmes has been suffering with injury all summer and was clearly in pain as she trailed home well behind winner Jenny Meadows.

The double Olympic champion said: "I knew the crowd were behind me and that was a special thing - it was just frustrating I couldn't be on top form."

Collins held his form in the 100m to beat the USA's Leonard Scott into second.

Michael Frater took third, with Britain's Jason Gardener and Marlon Devonish in fourth and fifth.

Collins said: "You want to win when it counts, and I always love to win in England.

"I know what I can do - and when everyone else is sleeping, that's when I can shine."

Gatlin, who beat Collins in the 100m at the Worlds, came through in the last five metres of the men's 200m to overhaul the tiring Tyson Gay.

He said: "Tyson came off the curb very strong, but I felt the energy of the crowd - people came here to see me win and that's what I did.

"I'll be back next year and I'll do even better."

Felix, still only 19 years old, ran a brilliant 200m to totally eclipse Williams in 22.54secs.

She said: "It was my race, and I just had to go out and run comfortably.

Britain's Michael East took an excellent win in the Emsley Carr mile.

East, who crashed out in the semi-finals of the Worlds earlier this month, put in a trademark finishing-straight sprint to win the mile.

He said: "I was very disappointed with Helsinki. I was in a bit of a bad way then.

"I'm delighted to come here and run this fast."

A tired Tim Benjamin came through for second behind Commonwealth champion Michael Blackwood in the men's 400m.

Benjamin, who ran in Zurich on Friday night, clocked 45.49secs, three-tenths of a second behind Blackwood and just clear of Alleyne Francique in third.

Double world 5,000m and 10,000m champion Tirunesh Dibaba held off the challenge of her sister Ejegayehu to win the 5,000m.

Dibaba had hoped to get close to the world record, but she was hampered by a stomach problem and clocked 14 mins 51.79 secs.

USA's Miguel Pate produced a shock in the long jump by beating world and Olympic champion Dwight Philips.

Pate produced a jump of 8.45m, with Phillips unable to improve on 8.38m. Ghana's Ignisious Gaisah was third with 8.23m.

France's Ladji Doucoure was another world champion to come off second best.

He was edged out by Dominique Arnold in a scrappy but closely-fought 110m hurdles.

Australia's Craig Mottram took the two miles with a dominant display in 8mins 11.28secs, a new national record.

Sanya Richards beat world and Olympic champion Tonique Williams-Darling into second in the women's 400m.

Britain's Christine Ohuruogu took fourth, with Lee McConnell in sixth and Donna Fraser seventh.

As expected, the men's discus was won by Lithuania's Virgilijus Alekna, with a throw of 69.22m - the biggest ever in the UK.

Estonia's Gerd Kanter was second with 67.51m, with his compatriot Aleksander Tammert third with 65.31m.
