Steve Cram has advised Dame Kelly Holmes to end her career on a high at next year's Commonwealth Games. The double Olympic champion has pulled out of next month's World Championships because of an Achilles tendon injury.
"It's always better for an athlete to leave in a competition rather than through injury," Cram told BBC Sport.
"She needs to be straight with the selectors, take it seriously and hopefully we can see here bow out of the career in a fitting manner."
Holmes has been plagued by a series of niggling injuries since her incredible success in Athens last year, and Cram urged her to drop some of her off-track commitments.
"The essential thing is she makes it her number one priority," he said.
"She didn't realise how many demands would be placed on her time.
"She's been in huge demand, whether it's to endorse products, taking on a role with London's 2012 Olympics bid, setting up her own training camp for youngsters or going out to Africa.
"Her priorities have changed and she's been trying to fit training in very early in the morning.
"But athletics at Kelly's elite level is a full-time job."
The Commonwealth Games get under way in March next year.
