Kelly Holmes got her season off to a winning start in Glasgow |
Kelly Holmes has been forced to pull out of the Spar European Cup match in Portugal on June 17-19 following the recurrence of an Achilles problem. The double Olympic champion was set to run the 800m for Britain but was advised not to by UK Athletics chief medical officer Dr Bruce Hamilton.
Holmes said: "My decision is just a precautionary measure following slight inflammation of my right Achilles."
Holmes will be replaced in the 800m in Leiria by 21-year-old Jemma Simpson.
Simpson won the 800m bronze medal at the European junior championships in 2003.
Holmes, who picked up the injury following Sunday's win in the 800m at the Norwich Union International in Glasgow, added: "My decision to withdraw is purely because I want to make sure I am right for the rest of the season."
