| Wednesday, 18 September, 2002, 08:56 GMT 09:56 UK Jackson aiming to bow out in style ![]() Jackson will retire in March 2003 Colin Jackson will make his final outdoor athletics appearance for Great Britain on Saturday in the IAAF World Cup final in Madrid. The British team will be up against continental teams from Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania as well as national teams from Germany, Spain and the USA on 20-21 September.
It is an eagerly-awaited occasion, not least because Jackson, arguably the greatest 110m hurdler of his generation, is bowing out after 18 years at the top of his sport. The 35-year-old Welshman is due to retire from the 110m hurdles after the World Indoor Championships in March 2003. Although Saturday is certain to be an emotional occasion, Jackson insists that there will be no sign of the tears that followed his final outdoor appearance in Britain at the Crystal Palace Grand Prix. He said: "I see that differently because I compete in the British vest. "I have to score points for the British squad and help them to be as good as possible in this team competition. "I do not see that as my last competition outdoors in the British vest." Meanwhile, former world champion and record holder Renaldo Nehemiah last week paid a glowing tribute to Jackson. Speaking ahead of the IAAF Grand Prix final in Paris last week, Nehemiah said: "Apart from Jackson and Allen Johnson there's lots of mediocrity out there. "In his era, without a doubt, Jackson has been the greatest hurdler in the world." Daniel Caines has withdrawn from British team as he is continuing to receive treatment for a hamstring injury. The Birchfield Harrier was due to run in the 400m and was a member of the 4x400m relay squad. He will be replaced by Cardiff`s Tim Benjamin. |
