Chambers shows Sheffield steel
Dwain Chambers and Mark Lewis-Francis leave Maurice Greene trailing

Dwain Chambers delivered another crushing blow to Maurice Greene by beating the world's fastest man for the second time in 48 hours on Sunday.

The British sprinter followed up his victory over Greene in Oslo on Friday by leading a British one-two-three in the 100 metres at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium.

Chambers stormed out of the blocks to lead the Olympic champion at 50 metres and finished with a winning time of 9.95 seconds at the Norwich Union Classic.

It was the first time the 24-year-old had run under 10 seconds this season, although the tail wind was such that it will not replace his official personal best of 9.97secs.

Mark Lewis-Francis, who stayed with Chambers until the final ten metres, finished second in 9.97secs, with Jason Gardener coming through late to claim third in 10.11secs.

Greene, who seemed to lose heart after Chambers went past him, trailed in sixth in a lacklustre 10.24secs.

It was the first time the Olympic champion had been defeated in successive races since 1998.

There was further home success for the Sheffield crowd to cheer early on when Yorkshireman Chris Rawlinson improved his own world best in the rarely-run 300m hurdles.

Rawlinson powered to victory in 34.48 secs, earning a $5,000 (3,250) bonus in the process.

Chambers was back on the track within 45 minutes of his 100m success but couldn't quite catch four-time Olympic silver medallist Frankie Fredericks in the 200m.

The Namibian installed himself as favourite for the Commonwealth Games with victory in 20.29 secs, ahead of the fast-finishing Chambers in 20.38secs.

Britons Marlon Devonish and Christian Malcolm, despite a season's best for the latter, both clocked a disappointing 20.81 secs to finish fifth and sixth.

World triple jump record holder Jonathan Edwards, who fouled out four times, slipped to his first defeat by a Briton since 1997, and his first of this season.

The Olympic champion was beaten by Philips Idowu, who recorded three jumps over 17 metres, with a best of 17.34m.

Edwards could only manage 17.06m.

Jackson defeated

World record holder Colin Jackson clattered the first hurdle and never recovered to finish third in the 110m hurdles.

The Welshman was beaten by American Larry Wade, who won in 13.37secs, pipping Latvian Stanislav Olijar - who clocked 13.36 secs - in a photo finish.

Jackson could only manage 13.43 secs, while his old nemesis Allen Johnson trailed home in 13.90 secs.

The man widely regarded as the world's best athlete, Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj, comfortably posted his 65th victory in 68 outings at the 1500m in a time of 3:40:20.

Sonia O'Sullivan confirmed her return to full fitness and form after the birth of her second child with a commanding victory in the women's 3000m.

The Irish favourite took control of the race early on and cruised home in 8:44:03, with American Marla Runyan a distant second.

Britain's Daniel Caines continued his superb recent form by holding off a late charge from former world champion Antonio Pettigrew to win the 400m.

Caines took victory in 45.67secs ahead of the American, who clocked 45.69 secs.

Sergey Makarov set a new Russian record with the third longest throw in history in the javelin, sending his fifth-round throw 92.61m.

He beat world record holder Jan Zelezny, who managed 87.77m and Britain's Steve Backley who threw 84.93m.

Ashia Hansen had to be content with third in the women's triple jump, her best of 14.36m leaving her behind Russia's Yelena Oleynikova, who won in 14.58m, and Cuba's Yamile Aldama (14.38m).

Mozambique's Olympic champion Maria Mutola outsprinted Slovenian sensation Jolanda Ceplak down the home straight to win a high-class women's 800m in 2:00:84.

Ceplak clocked 2:00:93 ahead of American Nicole Teter, with Britain's Olympic bronze medallist Kelly Holmes in fourth.
