The American sprinter has committed to running at all seven meetings in the centrepiece series of the European outdoor circuit. Greene will make his opening appearance at the Bislett Games in Oslo on 28 June, racing through to the final event on 6 September in Berlin. "I'm delighted that Maurice, the fastest man on earth, has agreed to participate in every Golden League meeting," said IAAF president Lamine Diack.
He added: "With no World Championships or Olympic Games in 2002, the Golden League will have special significance. "We expect to have nothing less than our best athletes at our best meetings, in their best form. "I believe the quest for record breaking performances and the share of the Golden League jackpot will make this year's event a real classic." Greene will be hoping for better luck in the Golden League than he has encountered in his outdoor season to date. The Olympic champion was forced to cancel his first competitive run after pulling a calf muscle in training. He was due to compete in the 100m at the Qatar Grand Prix but did not appear at the start of the race, which was won by Bernard Williams. Greene, who won three gold medals at the 2000 Olympics, has a history of injuries. Most recently, the 27-year-old strained a leg muscle while winning the 100m final at the Edmonton World Championships last August in a time of 9.79 seconds. | See also: 15 May 02 | Athletics 17 Apr 02 | Athletics 29 Aug 01 | Athletics 16 Aug 01 | World Athletics 06 Aug 01 | Photo Galleries Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Athletics stories now: Links to more Athletics stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
