Greene out of 100m showdown

Greene has withdrawn from the meeting
World 100m champion Maurice Greene has withdrawn from the Norwich Union Classic meeting in Gateshead on Sunday.

Greene, who triumphed in Edmonton to claim his third consecutive World Championship gold, has failed to recover from the injury he sustained on his way to clocking 9.82 seconds.

The American announced last week that he would not compete in the Zurich Golden League meeting in Switzerland on Friday and is still struggling with the hamstring problem.

However, Greene's compatriot Tim Montgomery will be in action at the event for a showdown with Britain's Dwain Chambers.

Christian Malcolm
Malcolm will be keen to erase memories of the relay disaster

The 100m silver medallist, who ran 9.85s in Edmonton, will be anxious to take advantage of Greene's absence by proving he is the second fastest man on the planet.

However, Chambers, who was placed fifth in a time of 9.99s, will be desperate to end the season on a high note.

The meeting will also provide Britain's Steve Backley with the chance to regain some pride after failing to make the javelin final in Canada.

Paula Radcliffe will also be more than happy to concentrate on seven and a half laps of the Gateshead International Stadium track.

Jonathan Edwards will no doubt receive a rapturous homecoming from his home fans, following his winning jump of 17.92m in Edmonton.

The event will give Christian Malcolm the chance to star in the 200m after coming just 0.02 of a second from silver in the World Championship final.
