Ten contenders were named on the shortlist for the 2006 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award.

With favourites for the award changing frequently over the previous 12 months, it was expected to be the most open contest for years.

And so it proved - with equestrian star Zara Phillips beating the hot favourite, golfer Darren Clarke, to win the main award.
