England's World Cup campaign got under way with a 28-10 win over USA before the much-anticipated rematch with South Africa. Except Ashton's men were no match. Wilkinson was still sidelined with a pre-tournament injury and Vickery was serving a two-game ban for a trip against the USA.
The scrum held its own, but otherwise England were dismal and slumped to a 36-0 humiliation.
And England's only ray of hope Jason Robinson limped off with a hamstring injury. With retirement looming, his career looked over.
