England's humiliating 36-0 loss to the Springboks in the group stages on 14 September was the turning point of their World Cup campaign.
An emergency team meeting held the day after the defeat was the catalyst for a reversal in form and fortune.
"When they walk out of the tunnel, in a fantastic stadium in front of 80,000, with people screaming and shouting and flashbulbs going off, they won't remember five weeks ago," said former England centre Jeremy Guscott.
"The only time they'll remember it is if they concede two quick tries. That will bring in the doubt."
