Leeds coach Tony Smith says he always had faith his players would clinch victory over bitter rivals Bradford in the Super League Grand Final. "I never doubted we had the ability to win, although I know we were in a tough match, a real final," he said.
"It has been a massive effort. There were 17 determined men out there, and there were others besides.
"I am proud, very proud. They are a special bunch of guys, and I am proud to be Rhinos coach."
"I tip my hat to both teams," Smith added. "There was a lot of pressure, and both teams were determined not to let the other cross the try-line." The Rhinos had to come from behind after a Lesley Vainikolo try had given the Bulls the early advantage.
But once Matt Diskin's touchdown had put the Rhinos back in front, they never relinquished their lead despite some powerful pressure from Bradford.
"All credit to the opposition," added Smith. "I thought Bradford were really good and they worked hard."
Danny McGuire, whose late try finally extinguish Bradford's hopes, agreed it was a grinding encounter. "It was such hard work out there and we are chuffed to bits," said the 21-year-old stand-off.
